The Linguist
Damn!
I don't know what's with me and the languages but they just keep hitting me again and again. I know more than a dozen computer languages. Ok, 'know' is not a proper word, but definitely familar or the fact that I had the misfortune of working with them in my past. Most people just know 1-2 languages and are proficient in them, but I know tons of languages and am not proficient in any one of them at any given time. So it kinda sucks at job interviews. I am perenially confused with the syntax. To illustrate this, let me count the languages which I learnt and worked with in cronological order.
BASIC : class 9th
C++ : Class 11th (my first major language, and the one in which I worked the longest. Also kicked major ass. I mean at the end of class 12th I was so good at C++ that a local company in my hometown asked me to work with them during the vacation time)
Pascal : Crappy language which I had to learn coz of course requirement in 1st year engineering.
C : Again due to course requirement, was funny learning C after knowing C++. Just my bad luck.
VC++ : Due to the thesis project in my final year of undergrad. One bad-ass language.
Prolog : Due to AI course in final year UG. May have to work again in my Grad.
Matlab : Ya, these languages came in quick succession in final yr UG. I couldn't care less. But it comes back haunting again during my grad studies as a language of choice in the research community.
LINC : What the hell! A pathetic mainframe language which I learnt for a full month never to use it coz of some morons in my first company 'Caritor'.
Java : Finally I learnt the most popular langauge of the current time coz of work requirement at SAP. Will now be my language of choice for all voluntary coding. I hate to say it but C++ is passe.
JSP : Again thanks to a automation project at SAP, had a brush with it and created a small demo. Now will have to do some major work due to my work at U Cal.
Perl : Work requirements at SAP again. Attended an official 3 day camp for it. Worked a bit. Most obfuscated language ever.
Webdynpro : The big daddy of all MVC frameworks in existence. Worked extensively and know it like the back of my hand. Pity I would never work on it ever again. Learnt the netweaver framework/SAP J2EE engine/Javamail/JDBC/JNDI/and bunch of other J2EE stuff also while on the automation project at SAP. My most extensive coding effort after college.
PHP : My latest language which I have to learn coz of work requirement during my Grad.
Don't know how many more....
I envy the guys who just get to work on 1 langauge all their life and not struggle with learning new stuff after every few months. During those C++ days at school, I thought my life was it, in programming ..... Sweet memories.
